McGee and Ericsson Summary

This article was about the grammar check in Microsoft word and how it can be harmful to writing. It does not account for personal style or spoken English but rather a coded set of rules for ‘proper’ English which is rarely used. This can affect the way a student writes as they can get frustrated with misspelling words or with the technology not recognizing the way they are writing and it could throw them off of their train of thought and hinder their work. It also causes doubt in the mind of a young writer as they are being taught that they are doing it wrong when in reality they could be doing just fine. However this technology does sometimes help, for example: if a student does have trouble spelling or knowing where a comma goes it improves their academic writing by assisting them and teaching them. The settings of the MSGC should be tailored to each user so that it does what it needs to and no more.
